Course Number: GD 111
Course Name: Life Drawing
Instructor: Mr. Woodstrup
Quarter: Winter 2002

Course Description:
Drawing from live models, the student will examine the anatomy, proportion, surface planes, and movement of the human form. Beginning with basic gesture drawings, the course will progress to detailed figure representations. The course will explore the relationship of muscle structure, light and shadow, movement and form.

Course Competencies:
Upon successful completion of this course you should be able to:
1. Observe anatomical and proportional relationships in the structure of the live model.
2. Discern and represent the planes, contours, and mass of the human form.
3. Translate observation of three-dimensional form into accurate and expressive two-dimensional representations.
4. Reduce complex images into simple components.
5. Apply the principles of light to figure representations.
6. Employ techniques to suggest movement in figure drawings.
7. Depict the mass and form of the figure with accurate light and value relationships.

Student Responsibilities:
1. The student is expected to attend all class sessions on time and remain the full extent of each class session.
2. The student is expected to demonstrate a professional work and design ethic. This involves the exercise of critical listening skills, participation in discussions and critiques, preparation in advance of the class, using class time in a judicious manner, meeting all assigned due dates and excluding any form of plagiarism.
3. Student projects and classroom conduct should reflect an attitude of courtesy toward others and observe professional decorum. Explicit sexual comments in the classroom or depictions in assignments may be offensive to other students, teachers, or prospective employers and therefore are inappropriate. Teachers may refuse display of inappropriate projects during class critiques and/or request students to redo such projects before grading.
